Pedal power for laundry

Published:

About this video

Could a bicycle help with the weekly wash? After handwashing children’s clothes in Burundi, designer Richard Hewitt developed SpinCycle: a laundry drum powered by pedalling. The attachment can travel on a bicycle and then work while the bike stays in one place, without relying on mains electricity.

The idea brings transport and a familiar everyday task together, with the possibility of a small mobile laundry service. This episode explores the design and its origins. The creator’s published account documents testing in Burundi, but it does not establish how widely the system is used today.
