Solar mothers: bringing light to their villages

Published:

About this video

Learning a technology does not always have to start with a university degree. In Rajasthan, India, rural mothers and grandmothers train in solar technology so they can help bring lighting to village homes and schools. Specialist knowledge or formal qualifications are not the starting requirement.

The Solar Mamas programme at Barefoot College in Tilonia offers six months of practical training. Women gain technical skills that can serve the communities whose needs they know. Access to light is linked to developing knowledge within the village itself.
